Report of 37th Farmers’ Day celebration held on 16th December, 2021 at the forecourt of the Office of the Bawku Municipal Assembly.
The 37th edition of the Farmers’ Day celebration for Bawku was held on the 16th of December, 2021 at the forecourt of the Office of the Bawku Municipal Assembly. The program drew participants from the Traditional Authority, the General Assembly, Political parties’ representatives, the media as well as Heads of Departments of the Office of the Municipal Assembly.
In his address to the gathering, the Hon. Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Amadu Hamza stated that Agriculture remained the dominant occupation in the Municipality and as such it was imperative to make it attractive and lucrative to attract the youth. He mentioned the theme for the year’s celebration as “Planting for food and jobs; Consolidating Food systems in Ghana” stating that it was appropriate to reflect the strides achieved through Government’s policies and programs under the Agriculture sector. He stated that a total number of 284,880(25kg/bags) of various types of NPK, Urea and Granular subsidized fertilizers had been received and had been successfully distributed to a total of 19,821 Farmers made up of 13,312 males and 6,509 females under the ‘Planting for Food and Jobs’.

He added that the Department of Agriculture had received over 170,000 quantities of leguminous, cereal and other leafy vegetable seeds which have also been distributed to beneficiaries of 2,739 farmers. Hon. Amadu Hamza also touched on the Rearing for Food and Jobs stating that 40 farmers had been supplied with 400 cockerels while 7000 cashew seedlings had been received and distributed to 150 beneficiaries. He urged the Municipality to remain calm and cooperative in its quest to ensure sustainable peace in the municipality.
Prior to the address of the Municipal Chief Executive, the Head of Agriculture Department, Mr. Dennis Asampambila in his address touched on technological dissemination to farmers stating his outfit had been disseminating improved agricultural technologies to farmers across the length and breadth of the Municipality. He added that some of the technologies available to farmers included good agronomic practices in various crops, use of improved seed, early planting, soil and water management practices, use of chemical fertilizers, compost preparation and use, animal feed preparation, kraal sanitation, dynamic kraaling, routine prophylactic treatment of animals and handling of guinea keets.

Touching on food security, Mr. Dennis Asampambila stated that training programs on prevention and control of the Fall Armyworm had been organized to build the capacity of farmers and agricultural extension agents as fall army worm was a threat to food security. He also touched on livestock disease control and prevention stating that vaccination exercises were being carried out against anthrax, PPR, CBPP and Blackleg by veterinary officers in the Municipality.
